Barbadian artists are being trained in the lucrative art of animation at the Errol Barrow Centre for Creative Imagination, using one of the world’s leading animation software developed by Toon Boom Animations Inc. And this week, the President and CEO of the Canadian-based company, Joan Vogelesang pays a visit to Barbados to lend her expertise and knowledge of the world market to chart the future of the animation industry in Barbados.

Ms. Vogelesang, who grew up in the Caribbean, has over 30 years of experience as a senior executive responsible for international business development, customer care and operational management. She will be a key participant in a strategic planning session taking place at the EBCCI on Thursday, June 24th from 9.30 a.m. The workshop will look at how best Barbados can exploit a burgeoning global animation market that earned more than 200 billion dollars last year, provide rewarding careers for the island’s artists, and become a major foreign exchange earner.

In 2004, the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry honored Ms. Vogelesang with the Life Time Achievement Award for promoting the Indian Animation Sector on the global map. In 2001,

Also attending the Barbados strategic planning workshop will be representatives from Invest Barbados, the EBCCI, the Shridath Ramphal Centre for International Int’l Trade Law, Policy and Services, UWI, the Trade section of the Canadian High Commission, BIMAP, the Ministries of Trade and Commerce, Education and Foreign Affairs, as well as members of the newly-formed Barbados Animators Network Guild (BANG), AnimeKon, and the department of Animation, Digital Media Studies, University of Trinidad and Tobago, and the National Council for Science and Technology (NCST), host of the event.

The Toon Boom Animations CEO is also expected to have talks with Canadian High Commission Trade Commissioner, Jacques Desjardins, and officials of the Ministry of Trade and Commerce. She will also be a guest of Morning Barbados on Thursday.

Ms. Vogelesang is a regular guest speaker at international animation events, including Asia Animation Conference, ChangZhou Animation Festival, HangZhou Animation Festival, eLearning Africa, FRAMES and NASSCOM Animation India. While in Barbados, Ms Vogelesang will also be the keynote speaker at the opening of AnimeKon at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre on Saturday morning (June 26th), and will be a member of the panel discussion that follows the opening ceremony. The Animekon Expo is Barbados' first ever pop culture convention bringing together the major players in the entertainment industry with their fans.

Ms Vogelesang, who has been nominated as one of the Top 25 Women in Animation by Animation Magazine arrives in Barbados today, June 23rd.

the living screen – 2nd sequel

Barbadian artists will once again turn on the Living Screen – through a series of computerised animation technology workshops conducted under the aegis of the National Council for Science & Technology and facilitated by Toon Boom Animation Graphics.

Students of the Samuel Jackman Prescod Polytechnic, the Barbados Community College and the UWI are also the target of a special focus on Animation in Education one-day workshops on June 10th and 11th at BIMAP. It is part of the NCST’s mandate to contribute to the internationalisation of Barbados through the application of science, technology and innovation. This year the introductory workshops have been extended to two, giving the opportunity to 40 Barbadians involved in any type of graphics, the opportunity to be introduced to, or hone their skills in this rapidly-burgeoning industry, which raked in more than US200 billion worldwide in 2009.

The first animation workshop was conducted in November last year at BIMAP training centre on Harbour Road. This year the venue will be the Errol Barrow Centre for Creative Imagination (EBCCI), Cave Hill Campus. The first workshop will be conducted June 14th-18th from 9 am – 12.30 pm, and the second from June 15th to 18th, from 2.30 pm – 5.30 pm. The need to launch 2 workshops this year underlines the intense interest in this relatively new field for Barbados, and participants are expected to include graphics artists who work in illustration, character development, painting (digital), colour/lLighting, concept art and background/set design as well as rendering, animating and motion tweening, scripting, storyboard, art direction and production planning, cinematography and special effects.

A number of organisations are assisting in this effort, among them the EBCCI, BIMAP, Invest Barbados, AnimeKon and BANG. BANG is a substantive result of the first animation course, formed to give new and developing animators assistance in furthering their career objectives.

This year’s series of animation workshops will also include a certification programme, which will be open to a limited number of people who have successfully concluded the introductory programme, or who have sufficient experience in the field. This will be held at the EBCCI from June 19th to June 25th. An introductory “Train the Trainer” workshop will also be held from June 21st – 25th. The venue for this will also be the EBCCI.

June 24th will see the EBCCI hosting an important strategic planning session. Participants at this session to chart the future of animation in Barbados are expected to include Toon Boom Animation, the NCST, EBCCI, BIMAP, Full Circle Animation, BANG, Invest Barbados and AnimeKon.

Registration for the Introductory Animation Workshop series closes on June 9th, and information about all workshops may be found on http://scienceiskewl.com/blog or by calling 424-0994

June 1, 2010

______________________________________________________________________________

This also serves as an invitation for (newsroom) to cover the opening ceremony June 14th at 11.00 am at the EBCCI. Will provide details in a follow-up email

Sent via email on June 1, 2010 under the subject: The Living Screen 2 – Press Release

Pearson Education the leading educational publisher in the world; having been in the Caribbean for the last 60 years has stayed abreast of the current technology trends and the needs of the Caribbean teachers and students of science and technology.

This has lead to the creation of the ActiveTeach; a fully interactive digital teacher’s resource intended for use with the Interactive White Board) and the ActiveBook; an interactive version of our popular CSEC IT and Science series in 2008. We have now made this technology available to lower secondary levels of the same subjects and have expanded our subject offerings.

SOLAR CELL

The students Lee-Ann Briggs from the Combermere School and Shanice Seale, from the Garrison Secondary School presented on alternative sources of energy and focused on using the sun to harness its energy. They showed a wide range of knowledge as Linda-Joy Forde, Head of the Science Department of the Garrison Secondary School looked on. The students presented two possible alternatives of solar cells, in the form of a copper solar cell and a titanium solar cell. The cells both are highly cost effective in terms of their production costs and are produced mainly from locally accessed materials.

The copper solar cell functioned using the process of electrolysis. It made use of use of coprous oxide and copper as the electrodes and simple inexpensive salt water as the electrolyte.

The titanium solar cell was constructed using a single glass panel, titanium oxide and raspberry juice as well as carbon emitted from a candle. They also highlighted the importance of the solar cells in relation to functioning as an alternative source for generating electricity to power simple household devices such as a radio, which can be used during recreational activities

The projects are all developmental and will undergo further modifications over time with a view of developing to commercial production which enables the saving of foreign exchange and the recycling of some material that would normally be discarded after their initial use.

Top Ten Current Uses for a Stirling Engine

Cordless hair dryer

Heats homes in The Netherlands with 50-75 hp engine.

Provides basic power (5 hp) in Bangladesh by burning rice husks on the hot side of the engine (Lockwood engine).

Provides basic power to remote African villages by burning wood (1-5 hp Van Arsdell-Howard University engine).

Power oceanographic exploration submarine for Jacques Costeau, the Saga, so his team can quietly sneak up on the fishies and the whalies.

Power the quietest military submarines in the world—a 1300 hp Stirling engine drives subs in the Swedish and Danish fleets (but not in the American fleet—yet!!!).

Powers a rotisserie attachment to BBQ in Tulsa, Oklahoma (The Stirling engine rotisserie is so valuable that the owner will risk life and limb to dash out into Oklahoma rain and tornadoes to rescue the rotisserie—but leaves the BBQ to fend for itself!).

Powers remote scientific research stations in Antarctica, providing power to run the experiments, the telescope, and send back data to scientists in warmer locations.

Provides power to homes and businesses in Las Vegas, Nevada. The heat source is a series of solar collectors.

And the #1 use for a Stirling engine today … A Cat Magnet! (Any cat within 100 yards is drawn to it!)

Top Ten Uses for a Stirling Engine in History

A car: the AMC Spirit was powered by a Stirling engine in the 1970’s.

Fans: from the 1880’s to 1930’s, fans were often powered by Stirling engines.

Radios and rowboats. In the 1930’s, an engineer from Philips Electronics in The Netherlands found a Stirling fan at a flea market. Buying it, he adapted the engine to run a radio. Unfortunately, the transistor was invented soon after, making the more expensive Stirling radio obsolete. Deciding the project wouldn’t be in vain, the engineer took the Stirling engine and hung off the side of a row boat. Imagine the people standing along the Dutch canals wondering what was powering that rowboat with no oars in sight!

As a veritable replacement for any steam engine, the Stirling engine is much safer—which is why the Reverend Robert Stirling invented it in 1816!

Refrigerators and freezers: Sun Power of Athens, Ohio developed Stirling-powered refrigeration units in the 1980’s but they did not dent the market.

Stirling cycle coolers generate liquid oxygen and liquid nitrogen in labs all around the world. It’s a moderately priced way to do so!

A yacht: Philips Electronics developed a 90 hp Stirling use for marine use.

Domestic water pumps: 1870’s to 1920’s.

Sewing machines: 1870’s to 1920’s.

And the #1 top use for a Stirling Engine … A Cat Magnet! Worked back then too!
